Psychological Capacity Assessment
A Psychological Capacity Assessment (PCA) is a comprehensive occupational assessment conducted by an experienced psychiatrist to provide an objective evaluation of a worker’s current psychological functioning, mental health symptoms, cognitive capacity and ability to safely participate in the workplace.
At Onsite Medicals, our Psychological Capacity Evaluations are performed by qualified psychiatrists who are medical specialists in the assessment, diagnosis and management of mental health conditions. Australian psychiatrists are represented by the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists (RANZCP), the specialist medical college responsible for training, education and professional standards for psychiatrists across Australia and New Zealand.
A PCA may be requested by employers, insurers, rehabilitation providers, legal representatives or treating practitioners when a worker is experiencing psychological barriers affecting their recovery, work capacity or return-to-work process.
The assessment provides clear, evidence-based information regarding:
Current psychological symptoms and functional impact
Cognitive functioning and capacity
Workplace-related psychological factors
Barriers affecting recovery or return to work
Functional abilities and limitations
Recommendations to support safe and sustainable workplace participation
The assessment typically involves a detailed clinical interview and review of relevant information, followed by the preparation of a comprehensive written report outlining the psychiatrist’s clinical findings and recommendations.
At Onsite Medicals, our goal is to provide employers and stakeholders with an independent, clinically informed assessment that supports appropriate decision-making while prioritising worker wellbeing and safe workplace outcomes.
