What Are Silica & Asbestos Medicals?
Silica and asbestos medicals are mandatory health assessments for workers exposed to hazardous dusts such as:
Respirable crystalline silica (RCS)
Asbestos fibres
These substances can cause serious long-term lung diseases including:
Silicosis
Asbestosis
Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)
Under Australian WHS regulations, employers must ensure workers at risk undergo regular health monitoring to detect early signs of exposure-related illness.
On-Site Silica Medicals – How It Works
Our fully mobile service brings occupational health professionals directly to your site, allowing entire workforces to be assessed efficiently in one visit.
e-Health surveys completed by staff
Workers complete secure digital health and hazardous substance exposure questionnaires before the visit. This streamlines the assessment process and reduces on-site delays.
On-Site Medical Assessment
During the scheduled visit, our clinicians conduct:
Spirometry (lung function testing)
Respiratory health assessment
Occupational exposure history review
Clinical examination where required
These tests help identify early respiratory changes linked to silica or asbestos exposure.
Chest X-Rays & Additional Testing (If Required)
A chest X-ray may be required for:
New workers entering silica/asbestos-risk roles
Workers without a baseline medical
Workers who have not had recent occupational lung imaging
We coordinate referrals seamlessly so your workforce remains compliant with WHS monitoring requirements without added admin burden.
Medical Reporting & WHS Compliance
Following assessments, results are reviewed by qualified occupational health doctors and compiled into a detailed medical report.
Your report includes:
Fitness for work outcome
WHS compliance documentation
Clinical findings and recommendations
Requirements for follow-up (if applicable)
All reports are designed to support your obligations under Australian workplace health surveillance regulations.

Crystalline silica is a natural mineral found in materials such as sand, stone, concrete, brick, and engineered stone. It is a common component of the earth’s crust and is widely used in construction and manufacturing.
When these materials are cut, drilled, crushed, or ground, they release fine respirable crystalline silica dust into the air. These tiny particles are small enough to be inhaled deep into the lungs, where they can cause serious health problems.
Exposure to respirable crystalline silica can lead to diseases such as silicosis, lung cancer, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), and kidney disease. Because of these risks, workplaces must implement controls and monitoring to reduce exposure and protect workers.
-
High-risk groups commonly include workers who regularly perform tasks that generate silica dust, such as cutting, grinding, drilling, or polishing materials like concrete, brick, stone, or engineered stone.
Industries and roles at higher risk include civil contractors, construction workers, stonemasons, engineered stone workers, miners, quarry workers, demolition workers, road and tunnelling workers, and some manufacturing and foundry workers.
Workers may also be considered high risk if they are exposed to silica dust frequently, over long periods, or at high concentrations, particularly where dust controls are inadequate.
In these cases, Australian WHS regulations require employers to provide health monitoring (a silica medical) to detect early signs of silica-related disease and ensure workers are protected.
-
Health monitoring for both crystalline silica and asbestos involves health and respiratory questionnaires, each containing specific questions relating to the relevant hazardous substance.
Silica medicals also require a chest X-ray at baseline, then every 3-5 years. For asbestos, an X-ray is only required for high risk work, or, if deemed necessary by the treating medical practitioner.
According to SafeWork Australia guidelines, health monitoring frequency is annual for silica and biannual for asbestos.
